Goma Kito

Goma Kito is one of the secret esoteric rituals of Shingon Buddhism, in which offerings are cast into sacred flames to honor the principal deity and pray for the fulfillment of one’s wishes.

Overview

  • The fire of the goma represents the Buddha’s wisdom, while the gomagi (ritual sticks) symbolize worldly desires (bonnō), the root of suffering.
  • Monks offer up these desires in the form of wooden sticks, burning them in the wisdom fire of Fudō Myōō (Acala), purifying the wishes and lifting them up as sincere prayers.
  • Prayers may include the removal of misfortune, family safety, physical health, safe travels, long life and good health, recovery from illness, finding a good match, safe childbirth, and more.

Purpose of Goma Kito

  • To burn away worldly desires and attain a pure heart
  • To prevent disasters and actively invite happiness
  • To remove enemies, suppress wrongdoing, and foster love and respect for others
  • To gather deities, guardian spirits, and loved ones in prayer for harmony and peace
