About Takaozan

Located about an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao is a highly accessible natural retreat that has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide and boasts the highest number of hikers in the world. Standing at an elevation of 599 meters (1965Feet), the mountain features well-paved trails, making it possible to ascend even in sneakers. Its ease of access and scenic beauty attracts numerous visitors from both Japan and abroad.

Mount Takao’s Yakuōin(Yakuo-in)Temple was founded during the mid-Nara period by the Buddhist monk Gyōki under the imperial decree of Emperor Shōmu, a devout ruler who sought national peace through Buddhism. Emperor Shōmu also established Kokubun-ji temples across Japan, and Yakuōin is considered one of them.

The tengu of Mount Takao serves as a devoted guardian who follow and protect the temple’s principal deity. The Tengu is believed to bring numerous blessings, including good fortune and protection from evil.

The one-way ride takes approximately six minutes and can accommodate up to 135 passengers at a time.

Aizen-sama refers to Aizen Myō-ō, a Buddhist deity known for purifying passionate desires and granting blessings such as matchmaking, fulfillment of romantic relationships, and marital harmony. In other words, he’s the Buddhist version of Cupid.
