Takigyo

Located about an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao is a highly accessible natural retreat that has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide and boasts the highest number of hikers in the world. Standing at an elevation of 599 meters (1965Feet), the mountain features well-paved trails, making it possible to ascend even in sneakers. Its ease of access and scenic beauty attracts numerous visitors from both Japan and abroad.

Practitioners wear a special garment called a gyōi during the ritual. This outfit is always white, symbolizing a return to a pure, undyed state of mind and body—a chance to reflect on oneself anew.

The torrent of water flowing from nature’s grandeur produces a powerful roar and intense chill. As the water strikes the body with such force that it can momentarily take one’s breath away, participants are pushed to their physical and mental limits. This extreme state helps purge distracting or negative thoughts.

From this heightened state of concentration, the mind and body release large amounts of dopamine, leading to a sense of renewal marked by heightened motivation and resilience. Additionally, takigyo is believed to offer benefits such as stress reduction and relaxation, while allowing the body to absorb beneficial negative ions from the natural environment.
